About Past Lives

Past Lives is a community of artists, hobbyists, and beginning business owners dedicated to creating employment and creative opportunities for ex-convicts and anyone else overcoming trauma or from marginalized backgrounds. Our makerspace is shared by dozens of Portland-based artists from a variety of creative disciplines including woodworking, metalsmithing, glassworking, painting, drawing, sewing, and just about any other creative endeavor you can imagine. Some of our members are offering workshops where guests will have the opportunity to learn new creative skills and equipment as instructed by experts, tour the makerspace, and leave with handmade artwork of their own! Past Lives LLC is looking to expand its creative community and deepen its social justice footprint by welcoming new members, specifically ex-convicts, to join its makerspace and creative incubator.

Our makerspace functions as a community incubator; allowing for a collective of artists, designers, painters, and hobbyists from a variety of creative disciplines who share the space to bolster their craft and career while contributing to a supportive, free-thinking community of creators. We host anyone with artistic pursuits who has previously lacked the resources or opportunities to mobilize such goals into fruition. By providing the space, tools, materials, and resources for growth including marketing and community outreach, we provide an avenue for ex-convicts to apply their craft and reintegrate into society via our organization.

Past Lives is a community of artists and  business owners dedicated to creating gainful employment opportunities for ex-convicts who wish to make use of the valuable skills they learned in forced prison labor, but who are otherwise disregarded by most businesses on account of their criminal records.

Our makerspace is shared by over 40 Portland-based artists and is equipped to accommodate a variety of arts and industries including woodworking, metalworking, glassworking, electronics, painting, drawing, sewing, and just about any other creative discipline.

We combine our skills and resources to create ethically operated small businesses, nonprofits, and community enrichment projects that all work to accomplish our social objectives.

While our original and primary focus is on ex-convicts and anyone else facing similar systemic disadvantages, we have space for anyone to create with us.
